ShelfScan CirculationShelfScan

Built for the people who keep libraries running

ShelfScan Circulation was created because small libraries deserve reliable tools — without the complexity, cost, or training that enterprise systems demand.

Our story

Most library software was designed for large institutions with dedicated IT departments and trained catalogers. But the majority of the world's libraries are small — a school book room managed by a teacher, a community reading corner run by volunteers, a church lending shelf tracked on a clipboard.

These libraries don't need MARC records or Z39.50 protocol support. They need to know who has which book, when it's due back, and a way to look up what's on the shelf. They need something that works from a phone, doesn't require training, and can be set up in an afternoon.

ShelfScan Circulation is that something. We built a cloud-hosted lending system that replaces paper registers and messy spreadsheets with phone-camera scanning, automated reminders, and a searchable public catalog. Fast to set up, easy for volunteers, and reliable enough for end-of-year audits.

What we believe

Our design principles shape every screen, every feature, and every line of microcopy in the product.

Clear over clever

Information is structured so busy staff can act without interpretation. Plain-language labels, reports that lead with totals, and microcopy that tells you what to do — not what the system is.

Practical over perfect

We prioritize what libraries actually do daily over exhaustive configurability. Sensible defaults, minimal required fields, and a catalog editor that supports quick fixes without perfect metadata.

Calm over urgent

High-traffic moments at the circulation desk are stressful enough. ShelfScan reduces that stress with steady feedback, predictable flows, and neutral status messaging — never alarmist warnings.

Trustworthy over flashy

Every check-out, return, and renewal is timestamped. Visible activity history, downloadable exports, and consistent outcomes earn confidence through transparency and traceability.

Designed for interrupts

Library circulation happens in the middle of everything else — a student walks up while you're shelving, a parent calls while you're processing returns, a volunteer starts their first shift with no training.

Every flow in ShelfScan can be paused and resumed without losing progress. Critical actions work one-handed on a phone. Advanced options stay hidden until you ask for them. And every decision is reversible — because mistakes happen, and they shouldn't be permanent.
